St. Francis English Language Learning
In our English Language Learning (ELL) Program, we focus on developing English language skills in four key areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Students participate in activities that promote development in all four areas. In the area of listening, students listen carefully to instruction in order to complete assignments. They are learning that sentence structure, context, and/or intonation can affect the meaning behind words. They are also given opportunities to respond orally and in written form to oral classroom instruction.
In the area of speaking, students are encouraged to share personal viewpoints on various topics, communicate effectively with classmates, and be able to put into their own words information that they have learned in class.
In reading assignments, we focus on developing meaning from context, improving vocabulary recognition, recognizing key words, improving pronunciation and learning phonetic rules.
Students have been engaged in writing assignments that involve writing complete sentences, and organizing them into meaningful paragraphs. They also work on improved accuracy of punctuation, spelling of words, and applying grammatical rules. We have worked on developing consistency with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement.
